Merchandise Buyer

Working very closely with the merchandise planner, a retail buyer helps to ensure the perfect commercial products are selected to bring into stores, based on their predictions of what will be popular with our customers.

Using their creative flair combined with strong commercial acumen, the buyer analyses and identifies consumer trends: they need to know what’s new on the market, what the customers will like and which products will make the most profit. They then negotiate with suppliers to develop and source a range of products aimed at a specific type of customer and price bracket and ensure these products are delivered to the standard and timeline required.

There are various levels of seniority within a buying team, ranging from trainee buyers and assistant buyers to eventually becoming a fully-fledged buyer handling your own portfolio.
